This Moroccan engraved brass wall tap carries that tradition into a functional object. The tap body is engraved by hand with arabesque flowing patterns. The cross handle sits at the top of the stem in the traditional position, controlling a quarter-turn ceramic valve that opens and closes the water supply.

The Engraving — What Makes This Tap Unique

The engraving on this tap is not printed, stamped, or cast. It is cut by hand — a craftsman in our Marrakesh workshop working with a steel engraving tool, following the arabesque pattern line by line, rotating the brass body as each section is completed. This process takes significantly longer than any machine alternative, and produces a result that machine engraving cannot replicate: slightly irregular, always responsive to the form of the object, alive in a way that perfectly uniform mechanical engraving is not.

The backplate is engraved separately — the floral disc cast first, then the petal surfaces and inner arabesque filled by hand. The scalloped outer edge is filed and finished by hand. The result is a backplate that reads as decorative sculpture as much as functional hardware — an object you would display even if it had no plumbing function at all.

Because the brass is unlacquered, the engraved grooves develop a slightly deeper patina than the surrounding raised surfaces over time. This creates a natural antiquing effect — the patterns become more defined and more legible the older the piece becomes. A new tap has beautiful engraving. Care Instructions

Hammam and steam environments: No maintenance required. Steam and humidity develop the patina faster than any other environment — and more beautifully. The engraved grooves will darken first, creating the natural antiquing effect that makes this tap so distinctive with age.

Bathroom wall mount: Wipe with a soft damp cloth occasionally. Avoid abrasive cleaners on the engraved surfaces — they can scratch the raised lines. Mild soap and water only.

Engraved surfaces: Never use wire brushes, steel wool, or abrasive pads. The engraving is on the surface of the brass and must be treated gently. A soft cloth or soft brush is sufficient for cleaning.

Patina management: If you prefer the tap brighter, a paste of lemon juice and baking soda, applied with a soft cloth and rinsed thoroughly, restores brightness without damaging the engraving. The living finish returns naturally within weeks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the engraving done by hand or by machine?
By hand. Every arabesque line on the tap body and backplate is cut individually by a craftsman in our Marrakesh workshop. This is what makes each tap genuinely unique — the hand engraving introduces subtle variations that machine engraving cannot replicate. Two taps made in the same week will have the same pattern but slightly different character.

Will the engraving become more or less visible as the brass ages?
More visible — significantly more. The engraved grooves sit slightly below the surrounding raised surface. As the brass develops its patina, the grooves darken slightly faster than the raised areas, creating a natural antiquing effect that makes the pattern read more clearly. An aged engraved brass tap is more beautiful than a new one.

Can this be used in a hammam with hot water?
This tap is designed as a cold water outlet — it connects to a single cold water supply line. In a traditional hammam, the hot and cold water are typically mixed in the kasa bowl rather than at the tap. For a mixed hot and cold wall tap, contact us about our other hammam tap options.

Is this suitable for outdoor use?
Yes — solid brass is outdoor-durable. The engraved surfaces will develop an outdoor patina from rain and humidity. In a sheltered outdoor space (covered terrace, riad courtyard), the result is particularly beautiful. In a fully exposed outdoor installation, a slightly faster patina development should be expected.

Does the ornate backplate hide the wall pipe connection completely?
Yes. The large floral backplate is specifically designed to cover the wall connection point and any surrounding wall preparation. The pipe enters through the centre of the backplate and connects to the tap body behind it — nothing functional is visible from the front.
